Saxony: The left demand better tenant protection because of inflation

Dresden (dpa / sn) - The left in the Saxon state parliament have called for better tenant protection in view of the price spiral with high energy costs and inflation. The housing allowance is not enough to deal with the crisis, MP Juliane Nagel and party leader Susanne Schaper made clear on Wednesday in the state parliament.

"Two-thirds of Saxons live in rented accommodation. Anyone with a low income suffers enormously from the housing costs and dramatic advance payments. Energy poverty has long been a reality for many people," said Nagel. The extended housing benefit does not reach all those affected. You need tenancy rules for everyone.

Among other things, Nagel called for a moratorium on termination if tenants cannot pay the deductions on time. In addition, electricity and gas cutoffs should be banned. Saxony must also advocate a nationwide rent freeze. More living space in the public sector and from providers oriented towards the common good is needed.

According to Schaper, 39,290 households in Saxony receive housing benefit. "The social welfare offices are suffering from staff shortages and will hardly be able to keep up with making approved payments and deciding on the many new applications. Affected people now need help quickly so that they don't sit out in the cold."
