Saxony: To show presence: Leipzig police conduct drug tests

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - The police stopped motorists on Leipzig's Eisenbahnstraße on Monday and checked for drugs. As early as August, officials carried out checks on the road in the east of the city, which "have led to good results," said a police spokesman.

The aim of the repeated control is to increase the presence on the Eisenbahnstraße, where a no-arms zone was set up in 2021. "There has been a lot of debate as to whether or not the zone is having an effect," the spokesman said. An evaluation by the University of Leipzig and the University of the Saxon Police has shown that residents want more police presence.

It is therefore planned to continue the controls in the future, said the police spokesman. Since the no-gun zone is to be abolished, new measures, including a new police post, would be implemented.
