Take the M18 motorway kitten stranded on the road to recovery.

A rescue of a kitten from the central reservation on a motorway is believed to have resulted in a full recovery.

Smudge, a four-week-old black cat, was seen near Doncaster at junction six and seven of the M18 northbound on Saturday.

The young cat was rescued by a National Highways officer, who brought traffic to a halt on the motorway.

Anna Leather, Anna's caregiver, said that she felt better after taking a "good soak".

Smudge was thought to have been left by the side of the motorway, and narrowly escaped being run into as the traffic roared past.

Gavin Buffam (traffic officer) said that the cat was rescued by him. "The first time she tried to pick her up, she decided she didn’t like me and wanted my finger to be taken off.

"I got a hissy and almost a scratch so I decided to leave her be. I retreated back on the hard shoulder."

Andy Binns, a colleague, put in place a rolling roadblock to allow for a second rescue attempt. He said that if it's alive and breathing, we deal with all animals the same.

Ms Leather stated that she thought Ms Leather looked awful. She was full of muck, and her coat was greasy and sandpaper-like.

We gave her a bath and a feed. Now she is a potbellied pig.
