Thuringia: Almost complete fiber optic expansion planned in Jena by 2026

Jena (dpa/th) - In Jena, almost every apartment should be able to access the Internet via fiber optics by 2026. The city and Deutsche Telekom announced on Tuesday that more than 60,000 households will be connected to the fiber optic network by then. Jena is said to be on the way to becoming the first fully developed city in Thuringia. Internet speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s are then possible.

Together with the public utilities, Telekom wants to connect 3,300 households in the districts of Drackendorf and Lobeda-Ost to the fiber optic network this year. The symbolic start of construction for this was on Tuesday. According to the information, more than 10,000 households in various urban areas will be connected each year in the coming years. This also includes the rural districts of Jena.

According to Mayor Christian Gerlitz (SPD), the connections will not only be put into operation after the full network expansion in 2026. They can be used immediately after the connection, so that most people in the city can rely on a fiber optic connection before 2026.
