Thuringia: donation supports the restoration of Bertholdsburg Castle

Bertholdsburg Castle in Schleusingen gets a general renovation. There will be money from the federal and state governments for restoration work in the coming years - but private donations will also support the monument protection project.

Bonn/Scheusingen (dpa/th) - The restoration of the fountain house at Schloss Bertholdsburg in Schleusingen is being supported by a private donation. There is a private donation of 230,000 euros for this purpose, said the German Foundation for Monument Protection in Bonn. The donation from a donor family made it possible to complete the interior restoration of the historic fountain house and to redesign the surroundings with the fountain room and springs.

The castle in Schleusingen, which also houses a museum, is to be treated in the coming years at a cost of millions. Planning for this began in January. It is one of the projects that benefit from a special investment program from the federal and state governments in Thuringia. According to the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, 10.4 million euros are available for Bertholdsburg Palace until 2027.

The German Foundation for Monument Protection explained that the funding contract for the fountain house was on its way to the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation. According to its own statements, it has already supported the basic repair of the architectural gem in Schleusingen (Hildburghausen district) for the past five years.

The fountain house at Bertholdsburg Castle is one of more than 590 monuments that the private foundation has so far supported thanks to donations, the proceeds of its trust foundations and funds from the Glücksspirale lottery in Thuringia alone.

Bertholdsburg Castle in southern Thuringia had been used as a residence by the Counts of Henneberg since the 13th century. The four-wing complex with multi-faceted town fronts and Renaissance paintings, together with the adjacent town church, characterizes the silhouette of Schleusingen to this day.

According to the foundation, the fountain house in the castle garden is an octagonal sandstone tower with a tent roof. A brick ribbed vault gives the interior a sacred effect.
