Thuringia: High number of deaths in Thuringia in 2021

Erfurt (dpa/th) - In Thuringia, significantly more people died in the second year of the Corona crisis than in 2020. There were 34,830 deaths, 4,604 more than in the previous year, as the State Statistical Office announced in Erfurt on Tuesday. That's an increase of more than 15 percent. This is offset by a declining number of births, which continued to fall by 3.8 percent in 2021. 15,377 children were born in the Free State last year - 614 fewer than in 2020.

According to the statisticians, there were 19,453 more deaths than births in 2021. That is a new high. In addition to the corona pandemic, the aging population is also a reason for the ever-increasing number of deaths, it said. There is no corona-related influence on the decline in births. One reason for this is the general decline in the number of women of childbearing age.

Most births and deaths were recorded last year in Erfurt and in the Wartburg district. The fewest births and deaths were in Suhl.
