Thuringia: left dissatisfied with democratic participation of young people

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Despite a new law, the left-wing parliamentary group in the state parliament still sees children and young people as insufficiently involved in municipal planning projects. Members of the state parliament Anja Müller and Sascha Bilay demanded on Sunday that the proposed regulations for the implementation of their democratic participation should be improved in the model statute of the association of towns and municipalities.

In spring 2021, on the initiative of Red-Red-Green, the state parliament decided to strengthen the participation and participation rights of children and young people on site. The specific design was left to the municipalities.

Referring to the interior and local ministries, the deputies explained that only 41 of 631 municipalities and cities have complied with the obligation to expand their municipal constitution so that children and young people have a say.

"However, it is absolutely incomprehensible that the democratic bodies should be left out at the request of the association of municipalities and cities," criticized Müller and Bilay. Most municipalities would orientate themselves on the model statutes of the central municipal association. This provides for the mayor to decide whether and in what form children and young people are to be involved. This regulation had been confirmed by the Ministry.
