Thuringia: New CEO at potash companies

Erfurt/Worbis (dpa/th) - The mining company South Harz Potash Ltd., which is examining the opening of a potash mine in northern Thuringia, is getting a new boss. The company announced on Monday that Luis Cabrita da Silva will head the parent company of Südharz Kali GmbH from November 1st. The 51-year-old Briton has been working in mining for more than 30 years - in various positions also at listed companies. Most recently he was president of a Latin American silver producer.

The mining engineer will also work regularly in the Erfurt office of Südharz Kali GmbH, it said. The incumbent boss, Ian Farmer, will return to his position as chairman of the board.

South Harz Potash Ltd was founded in 2013 under a different name. It has acquired mining rights in the Ohm Mountains in northern Thuringia. According to a study by Südharz Kali GmbH, the potash deposits there can be mined profitably. That was the result of test drilling this year. The company has plans to open a new pit in the region, which has been shaped by potash mining for decades.
