Thuringia: punch in the face: prison sentence for 51-year-olds

Erfurt (dpa/th) - Because of the death of a man in Geraberg, a 51-year-old has to go to prison for three and a half years. The district court of Erfurt found the accused guilty of bodily harm resulting in death. The 51-year-old did not want the victim's death - but he had to be blamed for it, said the presiding judge Markus von Hagen on the verdict.

The court saw it as proven that in January 2019 the accused punched a petrol station customer in the face in Geraberg. As a result, the victim fell, hit his head and died in hospital days later. The victim wanted to stand by a gas station employee who felt harassed by the accused.

Due to the defendant's bipolar disorder, the court recognized limited criminal responsibility. In addition, due to the long duration of the proceedings, four months of the prison sentence are already considered to have been served. Prosecutors had asked for three years and nine months in prison. The defense had requested a two-year suspended sentence. The verdict is not yet legally binding. The defense has already announced a revision.
