Thuringia: Thuringian Left wants to discuss Ramelow's candidacy

Erfurt (dpa/th) - On November 26, the Thuringian Left wants to discuss a possible further top candidate for Bodo Ramelow in the 2024 state elections. This was announced by Thuringia's Left Party leader Steffen Dittes on Wednesday in Erfurt. Consultations of party bodies are planned for the day. When asked if this was the right time to discuss the question of Ramelow's top candidacy and possibly make a decision, Dittes said: "It will be like that, yes."

In Thuringia, a new state parliament is to be elected in 2024. The federal state is currently governed by a red-red-green minority government with Bodo Ramelow as prime minister. For majorities in parliament, his coalition relies on four votes from the opposition, which has always come from the CDU.

The left is the strongest force in Thuringia, but recently lost some of its approval in polls compared to its result in the 2019 state election. Bodo Ramelow is largely credited with the fact that the left in Thuringia, in contrast to other states and at the federal level, achieved good results in the past state elections.
