Jena (dpa/th) - A location for the German Center for Mental Health is being built in Jena. According to the Ministry of Science, the research project at the Jena University Hospital, which aims to better understand mental illnesses, is also financially supported by the state. Science Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee (SPD) presented a Jena project team with start-up funding of a quarter of a million euros on Monday.

He also informed himself about the preparations for the installation of an MRT device, for which Thuringia provided more than ten million euros from EU funds. The device should go into operation this year.

According to the university hospital, Jena was selected by an international expert jury in the summer of 2021 together with Magdeburg and Halle as the Central German location of the German center. It is about a federal health research center.

"In order to maintain mental health and treat their disorders, we look at the whole patient and, above all, research the influence of immune factors, but also of the intestinal microbiome on brain function," explained the director of the Jena Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, martin walter He is also spokesman for the central German location. The aim is to develop new concepts for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.

Other locations of the German center are Munich, Berlin, Mannheim, Tübingen and Bochum.
