Allegations in the fraud process: key witness calls Wirecard a “cancer”

Shortly after Wirecard went bankrupt, manager Oliver Bellenhaus presented himself to the Munich authorities and gave a comprehensive statement. In court, he now accuses the former CEO Markus Braun of being a key figure in years of fraud involving billions, who acted "absolutistically".

In the fraud process surrounding the multi-billion dollar bankruptcy of the Wirecard financial group, the accused manager Oliver Bellenhaus made allegations against the former boss Markus Braun. Wirecard was a "cancerous growth that was growing," he said before the Munich Regional Court. He described the enterprise as a system of subservience.

Braun acted as an "absolute CEO". He was the core on which everything was geared. Bellenhaus spoke of "gamblers, criminals and traitors". "I consciously agree with that. Blind loyalty to Braun and Marsalek got me in prison."

Bellenhaus was the governor of Wirecard in Dubai and is a key witness in the process. Shortly after Wirecard went bankrupt in the summer of 2020, he turned himself in to the Munich authorities and gave extensive testimony to the public prosecutor. The public prosecutor's office also bases their charges on his statements on the so-called third-party business in Asia, which he controlled in part from Dubai.

According to Bellenhaus and the public prosecutor's office, the deals were invented. CEO Markus Braun insists that they existed and that the money was put aside by others involved. Lawyers for the 49-year-old had demanded a reduction in his sentence and his release from custody for a confession in court. The court and the public prosecutor had rejected this. Bellenhaus has been in custody for almost two and a half years.
