Chronicle The new life, 20 years later, of the woman who killed her friend to keep her baby and became a mother in jail

Isabel Marcos Maceiras was 24 years old and had an unlimited desire to be a mother. In cahoots with her parents and her husband, she got it, not caring about the corpse she left along the way. And it is that, to achieve this, she killed her friend Vanessa Lorente Jiménez, kept her four-month-old baby and passed it off as her own. It happened in August 2002 and, despite the fact that she managed to evade the action of Justice for the first month, she ended up in prison. Now, 20 and a half years later, she has a new life. Every day, she is released to work and the desire for motherhood that made her a murderer of hers has been fulfilled with a son that she conceived in prison.

This new life has as its epicenter the Carmela Arias y Díaz de Rábago Social Integration Center in A Coruña. She moved there in March 2021, as this newspaper has been able to confirm, from the Teixeiro prison where she had served the bulk of her sentence, 30 years in prison imposed by the Coruña Provincial Court and confirmed by the Supreme Court. She now enjoys a third degree prison and for the last two years she has held a job abroad that allows her to only have to go to the CIS to sleep.

During that time in prison, he established a relationship with another prisoner and, when consolidated, they began to enjoy face-to-face encounters. In one of them, she got pregnant and became a mother. Although her relationship with the child's father ended after her, she achieved the real birth that she longed for so much that two decades ago she ended up faking it. Her 30 years in prison include 20 for the crime of murder, eight for illegal detention and two for the crime of supposing childbirth.

His obsession had turned his life upside down already nine months before the crime. At the end of 2001, when she had just turned 24 in November, she left the home in the town of Monfero in A Coruña that she shared with her parents and her husband. She was unable to have children and she broke up with her marriage to go live in the town of Fene with a new partner. Through that boyfriend he met the one who would become his victim, Vanessa, the partner of a friend of his. The 22-year-old girl was pregnant and Isabel began to hatch her plan, beginning to tell her friends and acquaintances that she was also expecting a child.

On August 13, 2002, she executed "a plan drawn up by her and her mother," according to the sentence. He met Vanessa in a cafeteria and went to the appointment, as has been proven, with the intention of "seizing her son" that her friend and her partner had had and killing her. The child was born on April 16 and the three got into the murderer's car with the excuse of going to his parents' home to pick up some personal items. But they never arrived, so, on the way, she stopped at the Pontedeume gas station and bought a juice.

The plan was carefully prepared and previously, with the help of his mother, he had crumbled and wrapped in paper a mixture of several "noctamid" tablets, a medicine that contains lormetazepam as an active ingredient and used to induce sleep in those who take it. She diluted it in the juice, gave it to her friend, and resumed her march. Shortly after, Vanessa fainted due to the effects of the drug and she took advantage of it to hit her on the back of the head with a blunt-surfaced blunt object. Isabel ended her life.

With the corpse of her friend and the child alive in the car, she went to the family home and her mother helped her carry the body to a shed near the house that was protected by a plastic sheet. They buried him in a hole that they had dug days before under the pretext of burying a moped in it and in the following days his father and mother prepared the shed to hang out the boy's clothes without the mud or the farm animals, dogs and sheep, dirty it. With the help of her father, they placed a cement slab provided by her former husband, Ángel. Isabel dug a hole in the place where her victim was buried and, a meter above her body, she buried that of a dog that her father had killed. Then they poured the cement.

From that day on, the four of them, mother, mother, Isabel and her husband, resumed living together. "In order to integrate the child into the family circle," and despite the fact that they were fully aware that they were not related to him, they took care of him "with full dedication" and, in front of the rest of the population, they posed as grandparents. Isabel's mother-in-law had doubts about the paternity of her son, but Ángel came to affirm categorically before her mother that he was her son. In this way, for a month, between August 13 and September 20, they lived together as a family.

At first, they all lived in Monfero and then the couple moved to the town of Miño, although they continued to go to their parents' house almost daily. Throughout that month, Isabel acted by pretending at all times and to everyone who treated her that she was her mother, and her parents and her husband supported her. Her conspiracy was such that all four ended up convicted.

Her parents, María Maceiras and José Carlos Marcos, and her husband, Ángel González, were sentenced to ten years in prison, eight for illegal detention and two as necessary collaborators for a crime of supposing childbirth. All have already served their sentences and are currently free.

Her family fiction was uncovered as a result of the investigation into Vanessa's disappearance. She disappeared along with her baby, leaving all her belongings in her house and without notifying anyone of her whereabouts, so a friend of hers reported it to the Civil Guard. She also declared Isabel as a friend of hers and pretended to collaborate, while she also pretended that she had just been a mother. Pulling her string, investigators became suspicious of her and ended up arresting her and retrieving her baby, which was delivered to her biological father. On April 16, she will be 21 years old after having grown up without a mother due to the obsession of the one who, for 38 days, she cradled and fed him as if he were her son.
