Saxony-Anhalt: Harz narrow-gauge railways increase prices for the Brocken railway

Wernigerode (dpa/sa) - The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH (HSB) will increase prices on March 1st. Only the prices for all travel offers to the Brocken are affected, the prices on the Harzquerbahn and Selketalbahn remained unchanged, said a company spokesman on Wednesday. The increase is unavoidable in view of rising expenses.

Specifically, the price for a one-way trip to the highest mountain in the Harz will be increased by one euro to a standard 35 euros, for round trips the price will increase by two euros to 53 euros. "The discounted offer for travelers who want to drive to the summit in the afternoon will be retained. From March they will pay 46 euros for the return trip, previously it was 44 euros," said the spokesman. Multi-day and group tickets are also affected by the price increases.

The company recently complained that the price of coal had doubled within a year. HSB's steam locomotives are powered by hard coal.

With around 140 kilometers in Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, HSB operates the longest contiguous narrow-gauge network in Germany. The track is one meter wide. The company's 25 steam locomotives, of which up to ten are in operation at the same time, are one of the most well-known tourist attractions in the Harz Mountains.
