Used car check: Volvo XC 60 - little to complain about, but quite expensive

The Volvo XC 60 is suitable for families if there are a maximum of four people. It is also characterized by a high level of security. But how does the Volvo SUV fare as a used car?

The XC 60 is a success story at Volvo. Sales of the first generation were high, and the design of the original still looked fresh years later. In the main vehicle inspection (HU), both model generations perform well. According to the “Auto Bild TÜV Report 2022”, there is not much to complain about when it comes to the challenger of cars such as the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. However, the used car prices are "excessive due to demand".

Model history

Launched in 2008, the XC 60 was the Swedish manufacturer's first compact SUV, which was refreshed in 2013 with slight design changes at the front. The successor has been on the market since 2017.

body

The Volvo XC 60 is a five-door compact SUV with no body variants. However, the second edition is built a little flatter.

Dimensions (according to ADAC)

1st generation: 4.63 m to 4.64 m x 1.89 m x 1.71 m (L x W x H), trunk volume: 495 l to 1455 l2. Generation: 4.69 m x 1.90 m x 1.66 m (L x W x H), trunk volume: 483 l to 1410 l

Strengthen

Suitable for families if there are no more than four people. In addition, the XC 60 is characterized by a high level of safety. Rust on the chassis almost never occurs, the corrosion protection is exemplary, writes the "Auto Bild TÜV Report 2022". At the HU, the lighting continues to impress well into old age. There is also nothing to complain about when it comes to the function of the brakes. Solid: the exhaust system. Almost always passed: the emissions test (AU).

weaknesses

The first generation was already affected by recalls because of loose shift linkages, the power steering or the electric hand brakes. Despite the sometimes powerful engines, both editions do not necessarily belong to the sporty cars - the tuning of the chassis and steering is too inappropriate.

In addition, there are complaints for the current generation at the first HU due to excessive oil loss. According to the report, there are problems with springs and dampers from the third HU onwards, and problems with the axle suspension and steering are added gradually during the fourth and fifth check.

breakdown behavior

The ADAC places the XC 60, first registered in 2010 and 2013, in the middle of its breakdown statistics. Specimens from 2019 perform very well, while the rest end up in good places. The club cites drive belts on specimens first registered from 2010 to 2013 and the fuel pump (2010) as the main areas of breakdown.

The engine

1st generation: petrol engines (four and six-cylinder, front and all-wheel drive): 149 kW/203 hp and 225 kW/306 hp; Diesel (four and five-cylinder, front and all-wheel drive): 100 kW/136 hp to 163 kW/220 hp;

2nd generation: petrol engine (four-cylinder, front and all-wheel drive): 140 kW/190 hp and 240 kW/326 hp; Diesel (four-cylinder, front and all-wheel drive): 110 kW/150 hp to 177 kW/240 hp; Plug-in hybrid (four-cylinder petrol electric motor; all-wheel drive): 186 kW/253 hp 65 kW/87 hp to 228 kW/310 hp 107 kW/145 hp
