A man killed a woman with an ax in Berlin-Lichtenberg. The perpetrator was shot dead by police officers who wanted to stop him. Officers were called early in the morning. When the police arrived on Löwenberger Strasse, the man struck a woman lying on the ground with an axe, said police spokesman Martin Dams.

The police then fired shots at the man, fatally injuring him. The woman also succumbed to her severe injuries from the ax blows at the scene of the crime. According to "Bild" information, the crime occurred on the ninth floor of an apartment building. There is no information about the motive so far.

The police have not yet released any information about the identity of the two. A homicide commission from the State Criminal Police Office has taken over the investigation. The emergency services involved on site are given pastoral care.
