Eight people injured: trial of poison attack at university started

In August 2021, a student at the TU Darmstadt mixed food with chemicals. Seven people are injured, one man is temporarily in mortal danger. Now the process begins. Since the 33-year-old is said to be mentally ill, it is a security procedure.

More than a year after the poison attack at the Technical University (TU) Darmstadt, the trial against a 33-year-old has now begun. In the security proceedings before the district court in Darmstadt, the accused is accused of attempted murder while incapacitated. A placement of the accused in a psychiatric hospital is being negotiated.

The accused from Mainz is said to have mixed food in various rooms of the TU with chemicals in August 2021. Seven people were injured, one man was temporarily in mortal danger. The investigators groped in the dark for a long time in the search for suspects. The woman was only caught in March, more than seven months after the crime.

It moved into focus through the trace analysis. According to the indictment, she is said to have felt persecuted. She is said to have partially mentioned the university employees affected by the poisoning in written records. The 33-year-old had been studying materials science at the TU since the 2017 winter semester. At the time of the crime, she is said to have been incapacitated due to illness. She is already in a psychiatric hospital.

On August 23, 2021, the police in Darmstadt went on an hour-long large-scale operation because of the incident. Seven people developed "severe health problems, including symptoms of poisoning" after they drank and ate something in building L2.01 of the Materials and Geosciences department of the university on the Lichtwiese campus.

Two people were taken to a hospital in Frankfurt am Main. The other victims only complained of being unwell. A 30-year-old was temporarily in mortal danger. His skin had turned blue from the poisoning. According to the public prosecutor, the seven injured are members of the TU.

The police then set up a homicide commission, which at times consisted of 50 officers. They ruled out a politically motivated crime early on. In retrospect, no letters of confession or the like were known. Around a thousand witnesses were heard. Dates are set for the process until at least February.
