How to Prepare Yourself Properly if You are Getting Braces
Getting braces is a major decision, one which no one should take lightly. And if you are getting braces, it can be life-changing, to say the least. Your teeth will be perfectly straight and aligned, and this can lead to a lot more confidence as well. But if you have decided to get braces, you should also do something to prepare yourself for the process. Preparing for braces is actually quite fun, especially since you can indulge in the foods you want before you take that leap. Here, then, is how to prepare yourself properly if you are getting braces.

A week prior

A week prior to your braces appointment with an orthodontist, it would be a good idea for you, as mentioned, to indulge in certain foods which you may have to avoid once you get your braces fitted. It's the perfect time to go all out on nuts as well as hard candies, and if you have a real sweet tooth, for that toffee or caramel treat as well. If you like popcorn, binge on it as much as you can, because you certainly won't be able to eat it once you have your braces. For those with a savory tooth, it wouldn't hurt to indulge in pizzas with hard crusts as well as bread rolls and have your fill of hard and crunchy vegetables and fruits such as carrots and apples. Of course, if you haven't done so yet, now is the time to have your teeth fully checked and cleaned. The orthodontist needs to have your teeth in top shape before he or she fits the braces, after all.

On the day itself

On the day itself, there are ways in which you can prepare as well, as recommended by an experienced orthodontist from Woodbridge VA’s American Braces & Smile Center. First of all, clean your teeth as thoroughly as possible. The surface of your teeth should be free from plaque so that the cement can adequately attach to your teeth, so make sure to brush and floss before going to the orthodontist. If you're feeling extra nervous, it may also pay to have a small talk with your orthodontist before they start the procedure of attaching the braces to your teeth. Tell them if you have any concerns and don't be afraid to ask questions. And during the procedure, if you feel any sort of discomfort, don't be afraid to indicate this to your orthodontist. Lastly, take a selfie. Take a picture of yourself smiling before your braces are fitted; this can serve as a reminder to you of how you looked before the braces got fitted – and why you are having it done in the first place!

Afterwards

Of course, the day after you get your braces fitted, you will feel a bit of an adjustment. If you experience any pain, you can take some pain relief medication like paracetamol or ibuprofen. You should also stick with soft foods right after your braces are fitted. At this point, it's best to eat stuff like bananas, ice cream, soups, soft bread, and pasta. Good luck!
