Caution, doorstep selling!: This is how you expose dubious craftsman emergency services

Unfortunately, among the many reputable craft businesses, some black sheep also sense their chance. There are a few points to keep in mind so that you don't end up with such a company in an emergency.

Is the washing machine broken? Or have you locked yourself out? In such cases, those affected are grateful for quick help. Dubious craft companies take advantage of this. The Berlin consumer advice center has repeatedly found that they are happy to charge those affected much more than originally agreed.

The scam: On the phone, such companies or intermediary platforms - contrary to legal regulations - often only name the net price, on which 19 percent sales tax is later added. In addition, travel costs and other flat rates were often left out.

Once the craftsmen are on site, the big awakening follows: Then the smallest measures would be carried out with an excessive amount of time and advanced reasons led to moon prices that could be ten times the agreed original price. The craftsmen then usually demand immediate payment by debit card or cash. Getting the money back later is almost impossible, according to consumer advocates. The company's address given on the invoice is usually wrong, and in some cases the people named do not even exist.

The consumer advice center therefore advises keeping a cool head when looking for a craftsman, even in an emergency, and not immediately contacting the first search hit on the Internet or the contact posted in the hallway. Instead, the services should be scrutinized closely.

If an imprint is missing, this is a first warning sign. It is also advisable to choose a local provider and avoid brokerage platforms. If you want to be prepared for an emergency, you can, for example, write down the telephone numbers of local locksmith and tradesmen or ask around for experiences from friends.

"If you are confronted with a horrendous bill after the repairs have been carried out, don't let yourself be put under pressure to pay them directly in cash or with an EC card," advises Simon Götze, a lawyer at the Berlin Consumer Advice Centre. "In such cases, try to call in witnesses. If in doubt, don't hesitate to contact the police," says Götze.
