René Weller: Former boxer admitted to clinic

Concern for René Weller (68): The former German professional boxer was admitted to the head clinic of the Heidelberg University Hospital, as reported by the "Bild" newspaper. "It literally slipped between my fingers," explains Weller's wife Maria, to whom he has been married since 2013, to the daily newspaper.

The ex-athlete "couldn't do anything alone anymore," she continues. "Didn't get dressed anymore, barely walked, trembled all over and didn't know anything anymore." The clinic is "the only real way out. And I know that he is in the best hands there."

According to the report, half of Weller's brain consists of brain water. "This condition is extremely dangerous," explains Maria Weller. The couple's family doctor warned of "serious complications" such as a stroke. She describes the admission to the clinic as "inevitable".

Maria Weller had already spoken to "Bild" about her husband's dementia in the summer of 2021. A nursing home was not an issue, she explained at the time: "As long as I can, I will be there for my René." According to the report, she now wants to take a room in the clinic. She knows that she "will not have her husband for much longer". She "did everything imaginable for him, which helps get over my mental pain." The former boxer's wife would "give all the money in the world [...] if he could be healthy again".

As a professional, Weller was, among other things, German Champion and two-time European Champion of the European Boxing Union (EBU). He ended his career almost 30 years ago, but is still one of the best-known names in the German boxing world. He also appeared on TV again and again afterwards. In the summer of 2016, he and his wife took part in the RTL format "Das Sommerhaus der Stars".
