After criticism of party videos: Sanna Marin publishes a negative drug test

The Finnish Prime Minister Marin was criticized for days after the publication of two party videos and took the initiative herself with a drug test. This stands out negatively. A whole spectrum of party drugs was tested.

After releasing a video of her partying, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has released the result of a negative drug test. The test, signed by a doctor, showed "no traces of drugs," Marin's office said. A urine sample from the prime minister was tested for narcotics such as cocaine, amphetamines, cannabis and opioids, said Marin's adviser Iida Vallin.

It was a "comprehensive drug test". "We have not decided how the test will be conducted," Vallin added.

A video circulated last week showing Marin partying with a group of friends and celebrities. The images had sparked discussions around the world. Some of the comments heard in the video were interpreted as an indication of drugs. Prime Minister Marin had firmly rejected such interpretations and announced a drug test on Friday in order to "dispel any suspicion," according to her own statements.

Marin previously explained that she spent an "evening with friends" and that the videos were shot "in private rooms". Although she drank alcohol, she did not use any drugs and did not find any other participants using drugs. Marin added that she "never in my life, not even when I was young," took drugs.

The 36-year-old social democrat Marin is the youngest prime minister in Finland's history. When she took office in 2019, she was the youngest head of government in the world at the age of 34. She had come under fire for parties held at her official residence before the video surfaced.

In December 2021 it became known that Marin had danced out of the house for a night, although she was the contact person of a person who had tested positive for Covid-19. According to a poll commissioned by Finnish television channel MTV3 at the time, two-thirds of those polled believed that Marin's partying outing was "a serious mistake".
