Protest against energy policy: several thousand AfD supporters demonstrate

The AfD organizes a demo in Berlin against the federal government's energy policy and thus mobilizes several thousand supporters. In the drizzle of the capital, they shout "Habeck has to go" and march through the government district.

Thousands of AfD supporters followed the call of the right-wing nationalist party and protested in Berlin against the policies of the traffic light government. Under the motto "Energy security and protection against inflation - our country first" the right-wingers gathered in the early afternoon in front of the Berlin Reichstag. According to the police, a total of ten counter-demonstrations and rallies were registered.

Many of the participants in the AfD event waved German flags and chanted "We are the people" in reference to the Monday demonstrations in the GDR. There were also isolated Russian flags and the black, white and red Reich flag, which right-wing extremists use today.

Speeches by AfD federal chairmen Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla were announced at the start. However, Weidel canceled at short notice due to illness. During Chrupalla's speech, the demonstrators chanted "Habeck must go". A protest march through the government district of Berlin then began. According to the police, around 4,000 participants were registered.

Opponents of the AfD had reported to the police, among other things, a protest rave in the Berlin club scene and a bicycle demonstration. According to the authorities, 2,500 participants were expected to attend the largest counter-demonstration.

According to the police spokesman, it is difficult to assess whether the significant disruption to long-distance traffic throughout northern Germany, which also affected Berlin, will have an impact on the number of participants in the planned demonstrations. The spokesman for the AfD said it can be assumed that there will be an impact.
