Riots, police violence, pyro: Pauli takes over the heated Hamburg derby late

Hamburger SV's brilliant away series ended at the Millerntor of all places: FC St. Pauli scored twice late in a hard-fought game after playing outnumbered for a long time. Before that, there is rioting, arrests and police officers beating a fan who is lying on the ground.

Hamburger SV's impressive winning streak came to an end in the heated city derby. The team coached by Tim Walter lost 3-0 (0-0) to FC St. Pauli and, after six games without a defeat, has to worry about the lead in the 2nd Bundesliga. Darmstadt 98 can already pass with a draw at Karlsruher SC on Saturday (1 p.m. / Sky). St. Pauli ended a run of seven games without a win with goals from Eric Smith (61st), Marcel Hartel (74th) and David Otto (89th). The hosts benefited from the early red card against HSV captain Sebastian Schonlau (28th, emergency brake).

Despite the unfavorable conditions before the match, Pauli trainer Timo Schultz didn't want to know anything about the outsider role. "You can exclude a derby from the rest of the season," said Schultz, promising "a lot of open-minded fighting." His team got off to a brave start. Captain Jackson Irvine headed just over after a corner after just 47 seconds.

After that, however, the favorite took command in front of 29,205 spectators, who repeatedly ignited pyrotechnics at the Millerntor. Goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj was there for the first dangerous HSV finish by Ludovit Reis (11th). The hosts were deep, but were lurking for moments of change and had the great opportunity to take the lead: Etienne Amenyido failed, however, due to the strongly reacting Daniel Heuer Fernandes (15th).

After the respectable initial phase, the encounter became more and more hectic, with many fouls and quick turnovers characterizing the action. HSV found it difficult to bring their greater playing skills onto the pitch. After a long shot from Vasilj, the guests' central defense was indisposed. Schonlau pushed the hurried Amenyido and saw the red card from referee Deniz Aytekin. Despite being outnumbered, HSV continued to play forward, but St. Pauli now had more space. Igor Matanovic almost put the outsider in the lead when he hit the post (44').

St. Pauli increased the pressure at the beginning of the second half. Leart Paqarada missed twice (54th, 60th). Smith then headed in from a corner kick. The match became even more heated, with a pack formation in the 68th minute even both goalkeepers were involved. Hartel then made the decision with his third goal of the season, Otto added one more.

Before the match, there had been riots outside the stadium. The police reported some detentions, the hosts complained that the operation was "proportionate" and called for "clarification". On a video, a fan lying on the ground is hit several times by a police officer, including with his elbow on the head. According to the neighborhood club, several people were injured. Twitter users accused police violence.
