Extreme low water: Brandenburg closes locks in the Spreewald

As a result of drought and lack of water in the Spree, the State Ministry for the Environment is reacting with far-reaching consequences: numerous locks in the Spreewald will be closed from Monday.

Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The aim of the measures is to concentrate the water in the main Spree and the large main bodies of water. As a result, small bodies of water could dry up and there is a risk of fish dying. Emergency fishing may be necessary, it said. With its canals, the Spreewald is also a popular tourist destination.

At the exit of the Spreewald in Leibsch, the outflow dropped to an extremely low level, the ministry said. The area is dry and the tributaries no longer bring water into the Spree.

Further tough measures would have to be taken so that the outflow of the Spree below the Spreewald does not come to a complete standstill. In order for the water to remain largely in the main Spree, many outlets have to be completely closed or severely restricted.

As a result, it could happen that the cut-off ditches and streams fall dry. Fish deaths could occur, emergency fishing would be organized. The State Office for the Environment asks all those bordering on water bodies to report water bodies that are falling dry to the administrative districts or, if necessary, to save fish and other aquatic life independently and to transfer them to water-bearing bodies of water.
