Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: New therapies against blindness in the largest lake district clinic

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - The largest hospital in the Mecklenburg Lake District - the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Klinikum Neubrandenburg - is starting the health forums again after a long break caused by corona. First of all, new forms of therapy and treatment for blindness in old age are to be presented on June 13, as a spokeswoman for the hospital said on Wednesday.

The topic is dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a gradual but unstoppable process that leads to extremely poor vision in old age. The macula is the center of sharpest vision in the retina. Degeneration has so far led to blindness. After decades of research, new forms of treatment have now emerged that can stop this process, the spokeswoman said. The forum will be chaired by the chief physician of the ophthalmology clinic, Christian Karl Brinkmann.

With around 1000 beds in houses in Neubrandenburg, Malchin and Altentreptow and 2600 employees, the hospital is one of the largest clinics in the northeast. On average, around 40,000 patients are treated every year, many in ophthalmology, which experts count among the leading eye clinics in the Northeast.
