Baden-Württemberg: Court orders expert opinion in the process of PFC contamination

Baden-Baden (dpa / lsw) - In the dispute over damages in the millions because of the environmental toxin PFC, the Baden-Baden district court wants to commission an expert opinion. The court said on Wednesday that the case could possibly be decided before the end of this year. Stadtwerke Rastatt wants to sue a composting company for around 6.5 million euros in civil proceedings. He is said to have mixed his compost with waste from the paper industry, sold it to farmers and applied it to fields. The paper sludge was allegedly contaminated with so-called perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals (PFC). They are toxic, harmful to health and practically non-degradable in nature.

Due to the contamination, the municipal utilities had to close or renovate the water works and have them retrofitted with filter systems. The scandal surrounding the environmental toxin has occupied the region for years. About 12 percent of the approximately 10,200 hectares of farmland in Mittelbaden are considered to be PFC-contaminated.

In order to await the report, the second hearing scheduled for mid-June in the process was cancelled. It is still unclear when the process will continue.
