Baden-Württemberg: Experts expect falling groundwater levels

Karlsruhe (dpa / lsw) - According to experts, the groundwater levels in Baden-Württemberg will probably decrease in the coming weeks. But the Baden-Württemberg State Institute for the Environment (LUBW) in Karlsruhe also announced on Thursday: "Based on current observations, large-scale bottlenecks in the water supply are not to be expected." However, below-average groundwater conditions already predominate in the south-west.

This is due to the developments in the previous month: "The combination of the high water requirements of the rapid plant growth and the low amount of precipitation caused an abrupt drop in soil moisture in May," says the LUBW report "Groundwater levels and spring discharges". "If the drought persists, the groundwater recharge process is likely to come to a complete standstill in the coming weeks, according to current estimates." Accordingly, declining groundwater supplies should be expected in June.

Seepage from wet April would have had a supporting effect, the authority said. In the meantime, however, the measured values are below average, often at the lower limit of the normal range and at times below. "In a year-on-year comparison, increases and decreases are roughly balanced," it said. Looking at the individual measuring points in Baden-Württemberg, the groundwater levels are only considered to be above average in Lauffen am Neckar (Heilbronn district), here even with an upward trend.
