Baden-Württemberg: Minister: Significant deficits in reading performance in the southwest

Ulm (dpa / lsw) - Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Education Theresa Schopper sees clear deficits in the reading performance of the students in the southwest. "It's alarming when 20 percent of children no longer have optimal reading skills," said the Green politician of the "Südwest Presse" in Ulm. "We run the risk of dismissing some of the children from primary school as functionally illiterate."

To counteract this, according to Schopper, language education should be improved in early childhood. On the other hand, one looks at how appropriate weight can be placed on these basic services in elementary schools. According to the minister, educational researchers suggest that every child should read aloud for 20 minutes. "That seems to be the only effective way. But it's not that easy to integrate it into a lesson," said Schopper.

Schopper sees the proportion of immigrants as one reason for the poorer performance of the students in the state compared to the federal states. "We have a very heterogeneous student body and after Bremen the highest proportion of immigrants, ahead of Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia," said Schopper.
