Baden-Württemberg: Raser caught after chase

Ludwigsburg (dpa/lsw) - He raced across the streets at an adventurous speed of up to 300 kilometers and dropped dozens of patrol cars - around ten days after his criminal trip near Stuttgart, the wrong-way driver was caught. According to the police on Tuesday, a 37-year-old from the Biberach district was identified as the suspected driver of the leasing vehicle, which cost almost 200,000 euros. The man did not have a driver's license, but had "authorized access to the vehicle" and was otherwise silent on the allegations. The motive for the forbidden turning maneuver and the subsequent escape from the police is still unclear.

Late in the evening of January 20, the man had turned the high-powered car at the end of a traffic jam on Autobahn 81 and raced back to Stuttgart in the wrong direction. Alarmed by emergency calls, the police took up the pursuit, but repeatedly lost sight of the speeder. A police helicopter finally followed the car on the A8 towards Munich to Mühlhausen im Täle (Göppingen district), where the man left the motorway, parked the car and fled on foot. The car was secured. In addition to the helicopter, 41 patrol cars from 6 police headquarters were involved in the nightly chase.

It was not initially known which different penalties the speeding wrong-way driver would face. According to a police spokeswoman, the man was "taught" after the personal details were recorded and released again.
