Baden-Württemberg: Research Minister starts large-scale simulation in the energy laboratory

The topic of energy supply is probably more important than ever these days. At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, researchers have digitally recreated the German energy system and linked it to a kind of mini-village. Now the Federal Research Minister is coming by for an important mission.

Karlsruhe (dpa/lsw) - Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have built a detailed "digital twin" of the German energy system. Even individual power poles are taken into account. Parameters such as Power-to-X systems for storing or further using excess electricity, for example during strong sunshine, or innovative energy storage can be switched on at will.

According to the information, the Energy Lab 2.0 is Europe's largest research infrastructure for renewable energies, among other things. Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger is to officially put the model of the energy system of the future into operation on Friday (8:00 a.m.) and start a large-scale simulation. A visit planned for the summer was canceled because the FDP politician was infected with Corona. The parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport and FDP head of state in Baden-Württemberg, Michael Theurer, accompanies Stark-Watzinger.
