Bavaria: 1. FC Nuremberg extends contract with sports director Hecking

Nuremberg (dpa / lby) - Dieter Hecking remains the sports director of 1. FC Nuremberg. The former cup-winning coach of VfL Wolfsburg and the supervisory board of the Franconian second division soccer club have agreed on a new contract after lengthy negotiations. This was announced by the "Club" on Thursday. Hecking (58) used to be the coach of 1. FC Nürnberg himself, and has been the sports director since the summer of 2020. His contract was originally scheduled to run until the end of June 2023. The association did not provide any information on the term of the new employment relationship.

"I consciously took the time to consider what my personal future should look like. In the end I came to the conclusion that I was in the right place at 1. FC Nürnberg and in my current position. I've made the decision full of conviction and with the greatest respect for the task," explained Hecking, who had also taken time to think about his private situation. His wife continues to live near Hanover.

"In the past two years or so, my work has certainly not been flawless. But we have initiated many important and future-oriented measures for the club," Hecking also acknowledged his own shortcomings. After the change of coach from Robert Klauss to Markus Weinzierl, the "Club" is currently only 16th in the table.

"Despite the currently unsatisfactory table situation, we see a fundamentally positive development in the sporting area. We are firmly convinced that Dieter Hecking has had a positive effect both in the composition of the squad and in the management of the staff and the structural organization. This should be continued and in the results and become visible in successes," said Thomas Grethlein, Chairman of the Supervisory Board.
