Bavaria: Antelope baby "Xankysha" born in Munich zoo

Munich (dpa / lby) - Guests of the Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich can pay a visit to a new resident - Kudu baby "Xankysha". The female antelope was born in early January, weighed 14.2 kilograms at birth and is developing well, as the zoo announced on Tuesday. The young animal spent the first few weeks sheltered and cared for by employees and veterinarians in the barn. In the meantime, however, it is strong enough to be out and about with the herd on the facility. The animal will remain in Hellabrunn for the next few months - it is not yet clear whether it will then be handed over to another zoo.

Kudus belong to the genus of antelopes. Greater kudus such as "Xankysha" and the herd in the zoo are mainly found in savannahs in eastern and southern Africa. The animals are not endangered so far, but are hunted by humans, as a spokeswoman for the park explained. Their natural habitat is also threatened by climate change.

Kudus have been living at Hellabrunn Zoo for over ten years, and there are regular offspring. The last kudu baby was born last year. The females are fully grown at around four years of age, the males at six.
