Munich (dpa/lby) - Full trash cans, confetti and rubbish - the two-day warning strike by Munich street cleaners left its mark in the city center on Ash Wednesday, at least in the morning. Traffic safety was always guaranteed, said a spokeswoman for the municipal building authority. On Tuesday evening, around one and a half tons of shards and glass waste were disposed of in the main celebration miles in the city center.
After a great day, there is usually tons of party rubbish. In 2020, the city cleaning had to remove 4.5 tons. Just for this Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, the Verdi union had called the street cleaners to a warning strike. On Wednesday morning, workers gathered at Marienplatz for a rally. "10.5% - warning strike!" was read on banners. According to the building department, around 180 street cleaning employees followed the call.
Until the traditional purse washing at the fish fountain with Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD), Marienplatz looked essentially clean, as residents reported. Only the trash cans were initially full. The symbolic purse purse should not only have a positive effect on the private financial situation of the participants, but also on the municipal coffers.
