Bavaria: Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt opened after the Corona break

Nuremberg (dpa/lby) - For the first time since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt will create a Christmas atmosphere in Nuremberg. The city had to cancel this in 2020 and 2021. "The anticipation that the Christkindlesmarkt will take place this year is all the greater," said Nuremberg's Mayor Marcus König (CSU) on Monday. The Nuremberg Christkind will open the market on November 25th at 5:30 p.m.

According to the organizers, the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. In 1628 he was first mentioned in writing. Until the forced Corona break, it had been attracting visitors from all over the world since 1948. In 2019, according to the city, there were more than two million. The estimated income for trade, gastronomy, the hotel industry and the service industry was around 180 million euros.

The city had actually planned for 2021 with an equalized market spread over several squares in the city center and fewer stalls. Shortly before the planned opening, however, the state government canceled all Christmas markets in Bavaria. The stalls that had already been set up in Nuremberg had to be dismantled again.

The Christkindlesmarkt traditionally starts on the Friday before the first Advent and lasts until Christmas Eve. As always, the Nuremberg Christkind will open it after fanfare blasts with the celebratory prologue, a Christmas poem, from the gallery of the Frauenkirche on the main market. Thousands of guests are expected. TV and radio stations will broadcast the opening ceremony live.
