Bavaria: S-Bahn timetable changes for a new signal box

Munich (dpa / lby) - Passengers on the Munich S-Bahn will have to adjust to extensive timetable changes from Saturday. At the weekend, different sections of the main route were blocked again and again, Deutsche Bahn announced. There should also be nightly closures again and again until June 7th, especially from Tuesday to Thursday. The reason is work for the new electronic signal box at Ostbahnhof. From mid-2023, it will replace the previous system, which is outdated and highly prone to failure. Everyone hopes that the S-Bahn will then be much more reliable.

Deutsche Bahn has summarized an overview of all construction measures in Bavaria on a fact sheet on the Internet. Everything is done to place the closures and restrictions in periods when fewer people are out and about.

The new interlocking is part of the mammoth project to build a second trunk line for the Munich S-Bahn. The core is the construction of a second tunnel through Munich city centre. So far there is only one tube through which all S-Bahn lines in Munich have run since it opened in 1972 and which is considered the bottleneck. It will take a while before the project is finished. Last year, massive cost increases and years of delays became known. The Bavarian state parliament therefore set up a committee of inquiry.
