Bavaria: Several lakes in Upper Franconia are closed due to blue-green algae

Bamberg/Lichtenfels (dpa/lby) - In Upper Franconia, two other lakes have been closed to bathers because of blue-green algae. The Ortswiesensee near Lichtenfels and the Badesee Breitengüßbach north of Bamberg are affected, as the responsible district offices announced on Friday. Just a few days ago, the municipality of Döhlau near Hof informed that swimming in the Quellitzsee should be avoided. Bathers have had to do without swimming in the Baggersee Ebing (north of Bamberg) since mid-July.

Blue-green algae are not uncommon in the summer heat. They can cause vomiting, especially in children and pets, if the water is drunk. They are formed at high temperatures and high nutrient levels in the water, for example when artificial fertilizers from agriculture or faeces from sewage treatment plants are flushed in.
