Nyon (dpa / lby) - FC Bayern will find out about their opponent in the round of 16 of the Champions League on Monday (12:00 p.m.). The first knockout round will then be drawn in Nyon, Switzerland. The German soccer record champions, who have marched through with six wins so far, are in pot one as group winners. There are only four possible opponents for coach Julian Nagelsmann's team: Jürgen Klopps FC Liverpool, FC Brugge, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.
Teams from the same country cannot yet play against each other in the round of 16. A Bundesliga duel with the runners-up Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt or RB Leipzig is therefore not possible for Bayern. In addition, clubs that have already faced each other in the group stage cannot meet. For Bayern, that's Inter Milan.
"In general, there are lighter lots," said Bayern coach Nagelsmann about Liverpool FC. "But you can also turn the tables. There aren't that many teams who finished second in their group and play against us voluntarily." Bayern were surprisingly knocked out by FC Villarreal in the quarter-finals last season.
The first legs of the round of 16 will take place on February 14, 15, 21 and 22. The second leg is scheduled for March. The final will take place on June 10, 2023 in Istanbul.
