Boris Johnson to resign as Conservative Party leader

According to the BBC, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will resign as leader of Conservative Party on Thursday, 7 July. This comes as the number of government resignations increases. His resignation will automatically lead to him leaving 10 Downing Street. Our British colleagues believe Boris Johnson should be Prime Minister until the fall when he can allow for the election of his successor as head of the party.

A Downing Street spokesperson said that the Prime Minister would make "a statement today to the country".

According to BBC, Boris Johnson will resign as leader of Conservative Party. However, he could still be prime minister until party congress in fall when a new leader from the Tories is expected to be chosen.

Keir Starmer, Opposition Labor leader, called it "good news". He said, however, that he didn't think a change of leadership was necessary for the Tories. We need to see a real shift in government.

This announcement comes after nearly 60 resignations were announced by the government since Tuesday, which included five ministers. A departure of unprecedented speed in British politics history.

The illegal parties scandal at Downing Street during the lockdown had fueled discontent for months. Tuesday night's resignations by Finance Minister Rishi Javid and Health Minister Sajid javid were a sign of doom. This was after a new scandal involving the deputy whip, who was responsible for disciplining Tory MPs. Boris Johnson had in February named him as "forgetting" similar charges.
