Hesse: Collection of modern art before reopening

Frankfurt (dpa/lhe) - After six months of renovation and redesign, the modern art collection in Frankfurt's Städel Museum is about to reopen. On Thursday, employees hung the work "Goethe in the Roman Campagna" (1787). After an extensive redesign of the collection area in the summer months, the exhibition will be open to visitors again from October 22nd. "We are presenting the collection with a new face - a new color scheme and a new air conditioning system," said Alexander Eiling, Head of the Modern Art Collection.

The collection was already one of the public's favorites in the Städel Museum and provides an overview of the development of European painting and sculpture history in the 19th and 20th centuries. On 1100 square meters it presents around 180 works of art - including pictures by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Max Beckmann and Paula Modersohn-Becker.

Recent acquisitions and donations, new permanent loans and works from the depot have now been added. Among them are other works by female artists who, with 9 of the 110 artists shown in the collection, are still far outnumbered, as Eiling said. A permanent photography cabinet is now part of the collection. In the course of the redesign, the implementation of a new color concept in the exhibition rooms as well as improved energy efficiency through the installation of the latest air conditioning technology and the conversion to LED technology have also been dedicated.
