Hesse: Hesse is looking for foster families: especially for younger children

Frankfurt (dpa/lhe) - There is an urgent need for foster families in Hesse. According to the St. Elisabeth Association in Marburg, younger foster children and infants are particularly affected by the current shortage. "The situation is becoming increasingly difficult," said social worker Bertram Kasper. Residential groups for children up to the age of six therefore served as an alternative to foster families. The children are cared for in shifts by social workers.

A similar development can also be observed throughout Germany. "Since the need for foster families has risen steadily nationwide, the Hessian youth welfare offices are always promoting it," said a spokeswoman for the Ministry for Social Affairs and Integration.

Rising energy prices and higher inflation could exacerbate the situation further. "That could still be a problem," said Kasper.
