Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - The inflation rate in Hesse is approaching the 10 percent mark. Consumer prices rose in October by 9.9 percent compared to the same month last year, as reported by the State Statistical Office on Friday. Inflation continued to be fueled by high energy prices. The annual inflation rate was 9.4 percent in September and 8.0 percent in August.

On average, energy cost 38.0 percent more in October than in the same month last year. Natural gas was more than twice as expensive as in October 2021. Heating oil prices rose by 78.9 percent. When filling up, consumers paid 21.7 percent more than in the same month last year. The price of electricity increased by 8.9 percent within a year. Excluding all energy, consumer prices rose 6.7 percent in October

Food prices increased significantly by 19.0 percent in October. Edible fats and oils were more expensive than average (up 47.3 percent), including butter prices, which rose by 54.2 percent.

Compared to September, consumer prices rose by 1.1 percent overall in October.
