Hesse: Poseck speaks out against videos of criminal trials

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - Hesse's Minister of Justice Roman Poseck (CDU) rejects the video documentation of criminal trials planned by the Federal Ministry of Justice. "The Federal Minister of Justice should stop his plan," Poseck said on Tuesday in Wiesbaden. He referred to an "exceptionally critical vote" from the judicial and public prosecutor's practice. The planned changes would mean "considerable dangers for the main hearing, which only serves to establish the truth".

"One of the fears is that witnesses will act differently in front of cameras," argued Poseck. It is not without reason that representatives of victims warned against changes. "By the fact that recordings are passed on online, which can hardly be prevented, the personal rights of victims of crime can be seriously damaged." In addition, there would be considerable additional work for the judiciary, Poseck said.

In November 2022, Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) presented a draft bill “for a law on the digital documentation of the main criminal hearing”. He plans to record the main hearing in the future in image and sound and to convert the sound recording into a text document using transcription software.
