Hesse: preparations for the large Chagall exhibition in the Schirn

Frankfurt/Main (dpa/lhe) - Preparations are underway in the Kunsthalle Schirn for a large exhibition of works by the painter Marc Chagall. One of his most important works was hung on Friday: "The painting "The Cow with the Parasol" (1946) from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is a highlight of the show," said the curator of the exhibition, Ilka Voermann. The work can be viewed together with 60 other top-class loans from November 4th in the exhibition "Chagall. World in turmoil".

The show is dedicated to a previously little-known side of the Jewish painter - his works from the 1930s and 1940s. About 60 haunting paintings, works on paper and costumes show how his color palette gradually darkened. Faced with expulsion, persecution and emigration, Chagall was looking for a new visual language.

The life and work of the artist was strongly influenced by the art policies of the National Socialists and the Shoah. The Kunsthalle explained that Chagall's art was rooted in the reality of his life, which was repeatedly shaped by political events.
