Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Dance demonstration against violence against women and girls

Rostock (dpa/mv) - With a dance demonstration in Rostock, Schwerin and Neubrandenburg, numerous women drew attention to violence against women and girls as part of a worldwide protest. In Rostock alone, more than 50 women took part in a dance on the university square on Tuesday, which they had specially practiced and repeated several times. The organizers focused primarily on the oppression of women and the current situation in Iran and Afghanistan.

Six months ago, women first took to the streets in Iran to demand their right to a self-determined life. In Afghanistan, since the Taliban took power, it has been women whose rights to work, education and self-determination have been completely restricted.

In Rostock, Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger (left) took part in the event. She assured the organizers "as a woman and mayor" of her support. According to the city, the women's shelter in Rostock last year offered protection to 34 women and 29 children who had fled domestic and sexual violence, exploitation and isolation.

The dance demos were part of the "One Billion Rising" campaign launched in 2012 by American playwright, writer and artist Eve Ensler. "Break the chain" by Tena Clark, who released the song for unlimited use, is used worldwide for this.
