Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: First clearance started after boat shed fire series

Neubrandenburg (dpa/mv) - Almost two months after the start of the series of fires in the boat shed in Neubrandenburg, the first clearances have begun. On a private initiative, workers with two excavators on Wednesday removed the first destroyed boat sheds that were affected in the front part of the large facility. The city has since been notified of the action, a spokesman said.

Using long claws, the diggers lifted charred wood, sheet metal, and other debris and loaded the pieces into large green bins. The city spokesman pointed out that this operation came about at the instigation of several private shed owners. Their sheds had been destroyed in the first and third fires. These owners, together with their insurance companies, also bear the costs. It is unclear to what extent the responsible environmental agency was aware of this.

The three fires destroyed more than 70 boat sheds at the facility. The city, as the owner of the area, is currently working on a disposal concept for the largest fire scene from the beginning of May, at the other end of the facility at the Kulturpark. There you can only get leftovers out of the water under the supervision of an expert, said the spokesman. The large fire site is also secured with oil barriers. The police are still looking for possible suspects at high pressure, a spokeswoman said. The total damage from the series of fires is estimated at around 1.4 million euros.
