Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Health insurance: Again fewer young binge drinkers in MV

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - During the corona pandemic, significantly fewer children and young people got so drunk that they had to be taken to the clinic with alcohol poisoning. After 393 cases in 2020, the number of admissions in 2021 fell again slightly to 387, as the health insurance company DAK in Schwerin announced on Tuesday, citing figures from the MV Statistical Office.

212 boys and 175 girls between the ages of 10 and 19 were affected. In 2019, 515 children and adolescents were hospitalized with alcohol poisoning. One reason for the decline is the temporary closure of bars and discos during the corona pandemic.

The DAK is also trying to prevent alcohol with the "colorful instead of blue" campaign. Together with Minister of Social Affairs Stefanie Drese (SPD), she started another competition, it was said. For the 14th time, pupils between the ages of 12 and 17 were looking for the best poster ideas on the subject of binge drinking. "It's cool to take part in this competition, it's completely uncool to drink yourself into a coma," said DAK country manager Sabine Hansen. The closing date for entries is March 31st. Cash prizes totaling around 12,000 euros are available nationwide for the creative winners.
