Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Holiday camp offers insights into police and fire brigade work

"Police officers can be cool too." That is the message of an outdoor camp run by the state police for young people from socially disadvantaged families. In the project, the children get to know the police from a completely different perspective.

Malchow (dpa/mv) - For the 27th time, the state police are offering a one-week outdoor camp for young people on the grounds of the state school for fire and disaster protection in Malchow. The prevention project is about giving young people from socially disadvantaged families a playful insight into the work of the police, fire brigade or other rescue workers such as the water rescue service, camp director Kathrin Wunderlich-Nickel told dpa on Monday. There are currently 68 children between the ages of 11 and 13 from all over Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, who came to Malchow (Mecklenburg Lake District) through the mediation of youth welfare offices.

It is about offering the children sports and culture. The whole thing has a preventive character, which is why police officers are also used as supervisors, said Wunderlich-Nickel, who works as a training manager at the police college in Güstrow. In the end, the supervisors also showed up in uniform. "Then the children see that it was actually the police officers they were with and they often have a different image of the police. Police officers can be cool too."
