Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Hospitals warn of a risk to care

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Hospital Society (KGMV) sees patient care at risk due to the high energy prices. "We have to expect that in the first quarter of 2023 not all hospitals will be able to provide their patients with full care, because they simply can no longer afford to buy electricity and gas, coupled with the already sharply increased prices for consumables," said KGMV Managing Director Uwe Borchmann on Wednesday in Schwerin. He called on politicians to address the problem.

The problem is not availability - the Federal Network Agency gives priority to supplies even in the event of a crisis - but the expiration of supply contracts at the end of the year. According to KGMV, four out of ten clinics in the country are affected when it comes to the power supply, and almost a third when it comes to gas. "Depending on the current contract conditions, these hospitals will have to pay between three and eleven times the price for gas in the future," says Borchmann.

According to the hospital company, some hospitals are therefore at risk of bankruptcy in the second quarter of 2023 without financial help or hard savings.
