Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Minister: Good local transport is important for the influx of skilled workers

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is trying to bring new industrial jobs into the state. The state government sees mobility, in particular local public transport, as a core element for the influx of the specialists required for this.

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The state government sees mobility as an important factor in attracting skilled workers to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The basic question is: "How high is the mobility of employees of such interesting companies to come to Schwerin?" said Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) of the dpa with a view to the failed settlement of the chip manufacturer Intel in the state capital. For him, the answer to this is a core element of a successful strategy.

According to Meyer, there is still a lot of catching up to do in the north-east: "In particular, public transport in rural areas - and thus the commute to the centers - we can certainly improve." According to the Economics Minister, the planned nationwide on-demand bus system, local public transport and rail connections should interlock.

With regard to rail transport in the state, the SPD politician also sees opportunities for improving the infrastructure, while at the same time it is about clever marketing for the existing offer: "Today you can take the ICE from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof to Schwerin Hauptbahnhof in just over 50 minutes ", he said. For people who commute from the Hamburg area to the Hanseatic city, this is something completely normal. From Neustrelitz you can also be in Berlin in an hour.

All in all, it's about winning people over to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Meyer could therefore also imagine an advertising campaign that tries to get people excited about commuting from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to the big cities. "You can still build a single-family house with us at reasonable prices," he emphasized the advantages compared to the metropolitan areas.
