Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Nursing home places in MV more expensive again: federal aid is dampening

The private costs for a place in a nursing home in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania often exceed the pensions of those affected. The federal care supplements, which have been paid since the beginning of the year, bring relief. Long-term residents in particular benefit from this.

Berlin/Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The costs for nursing home places in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania continue to rise more than in all other federal states, but remain moderate in a comparison of the states. As can be seen from data from the Association of Substitute Funds, at the beginning of July the personal contribution for a place in a home in the north-east was 1828 euros per month on average. That was 132 euros more than at the beginning of this year. On a nationwide average, the contributions calculated for home residents rose formally by 69 to 2248 euros per month in the first half of the year. However, the co-payments were lower in real terms because the federal government has been paying home residents a subsidy for care and support since January 1st - staggered according to the length of stay.

In the first year in the home, on July 1st, with state aid of 5 percent, a nationwide average of 2,200 euros per month was due out of pocket, in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania 1,786 euros. Baden-Württemberg recorded the highest cost rate with 2555, the lowest in Saxony-Anhalt with 1662 euros per month. The subsidies increase with longer stays in the home and then dampen the cost increases for accommodation more strongly, by up to 70 percent for stays of more than three years. Anyone living in a nursing home for more than three years is currently paying around 450 euros less in the north-east than in December 2021.

According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, around 20,000 people live in nursing homes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. According to calculations by the German pension insurance, the average pension in the north-east is around 1300 euros a month.

The personal contributions to be paid by the residents are made up of three items. According to calculations by the substitute health insurance association in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, an average of 836 euros is currently charged for care and support, 655 euros for room and food and 337 euros per month as an investment flat rate. Depending on the care level, the home operators also receive money from the care insurance companies.
